<image:caption>"Winter Mink on the Move – Huntington Beach State Park" This image captures an American Mink in its element at Huntington Beach State Park. Bathed in golden light, the mink moves gracefully across the sand, its rich brown fur standing out against the landscape. Mink lives within the rocks along the jetty. It is also common to see a folks fishing along the jetty in the winter. A lady put down her reel after the mink scurried away to share a story of her own. She had caught a large fish one day and just had to take a picture of it. So, she sat the fish down and turned and grabbed her camera. When she turns back a mink was scurrying away with her fish. She said oh well, maybe it had babies to feed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fall color spreading across the Great Smoky Mountains, shot from above just as the season was starting to turn. From up here you can see the color change happening in patches, some ridges still green, others already blazing orange and red. It's a slower, quieter kind of transformation than you'd think, one hillside at a time. I try to catch this window every year, because it never lasts more than a couple of weeks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sunrise over the Atlantic near Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina, the sky lit up in orange and purple just before the sun broke the horizon. I'd been out shooting shorebirds along this stretch of coast, but the sky that morning was doing something too good to ignore. There's a driftwood log in the foreground I almost didn't notice until I was reviewing the shots later, and it ended up being exactly what the composition needed. Some mornings the birds have to wait.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The endless curves of the Palouse, Washington, light and shadow doing all the work here. I could shoot this region for weeks and never run out of angles, every dune of farmland catching the light a little differently as the sun moves. There's almost a topographic-map quality to it from this height, all contour lines and gradients. It's one of those landscapes that photographs like an abstract painting if you let it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The center peak of the Three Sisters, Alberta, breaking through a layer of low cloud rolling through the valley. Canada never disappoints when it comes to mountains, and this particular morning the clouds kept shifting just enough to reveal and re-hide the summit every few minutes. I waited around longer than I probably needed to, just to see it clear completely once. It never quite did, and honestly, the half-hidden version might be the better photo anyway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The walls of Antelope Canyon, sculpted by centuries of flash floods into these impossible flowing curves. Light bounces around down there in a way that's hard to describe until you've stood in it, everything glowing orange and gold depending on where the sun happens to be hitting the slot above. It's one of the few places I've photographed where the rock itself feels almost alive. No two frames from that canyon ever look quite the same.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The full Three Sisters range, Alberta, reflected in a still alpine lake, a different angle from the cloudy shot I got earlier that same trip. Within a couple of hours the sky had completely cleared, and the water had gone flat calm, so I doubled back to try the same peaks again. Having both versions from one trip is a nice reminder of how much a single afternoon can change. I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so now they both live here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Red Rock Canyon just outside Las Vegas, striking rust-red canyon walls against a hard, clear desert sky. It's a strange feeling to drive twenty minutes from the Strip and end up somewhere this quiet and this old-looking. The color in that rock comes from iron oxide, basically the same thing that turns metal to rust, just laid down over millions of years instead of overnight. Standing out there, the city might as well not exist.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A pond tucked back in the woods, caught right as the light was changing fast, the whole sky and water going gold and then amber within a few minutes. It almost looked painted rather than photographed by the time I got the exposure right. I remember second-guessing the colors on the back of my camera, thinking I'd oversaturated something, but no, that's genuinely what it looked like. Some evenings the light does more work than you ever could.</image:caption>

<image:caption>More of the Palouse, Washington, because I honestly couldn't stop shooting these hills once I got up there. Every angle looked completely different, patchwork fields shifting from deep green to almost gold depending on the crop and the light. I probably have a hundred variations of this same rolling landscape from that one trip. Some places you just don't want to leave.</image:caption>

Getting there meant leaving well before sunrise, windshield frosted over and coffee going cold in the cupholder. Mornings like that make you question the whole plan right up until the fog starts glowing and it all suddenly makes sense. Worth every minute of that early wake-up call.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mount Rainier, Washington, rising over a green meadow full of wildflowers on a rare clear day. It hides behind clouds more often than not, so much so that locals joke about whether the mountain is even really there. When it finally does show itself, the whole scale of it is honestly a little startling, even after you know it's coming. I waited most of a week for this particular sky, and it was worth every cloudy day before it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An old abandoned homestead in the Palouse, Washington, slowly being reclaimed by the fields growing up around it. Someone built this and worked this land, and now it just sits here quietly falling apart, the crops still coming in every year like nothing happened. There's something about an abandoned building in the middle of an otherwise thriving landscape that always stops me. I like imagining who lived there, even though I'll never actually know.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another view from Steptoe Butte, Washington, farmland stitched together into these rolling, wave-like patterns as far as I could see. I ended up going back to this overlook on three separate trips, because the light and the crop colors change so much season to season. It's honestly one of the more meditative places I've photographed, just standing up there watching shadows crawl across the hills. I could probably shoot this exact spot every year for the rest of my life and never get bored of it.</image:caption>
