This intimate portrait captures a female Orchard Oriole (Icterus galbula) balanced on the soft tips of a young pine. The birdβs lemon-yellow body and olive wings pop against the out-of-focus green, drawing the eye to her slender, slightly curved bill and fanned tail. Orioles are more often seen weaving hanging nests high in leafy trees, so finding one momentarily grounded on pine makes this a quiet, uncommon view. I framed the scene to echo the vertical rhythm of the needles, letting the negative space surround the bird and keep the composition clean. Whether youβre a birder or simply love bold color on a minimalist backdrop, this piece brings a calm, nature-first feel to any room.

Wallace D. Wattles said God knows the hairs on our head and when a sparrow falls. Such a striking statement for such a common bird. But this sparrow caused me to notice her. She had a mouth full of caterpillars and would not budge as i moved along the trail. It was apparent that she must have babies nearby. I heard them crying to be fed but she kept an eye on me. So rather than add any more stress i moved along my way but did enjoy the brief moments with her. Poor caterpillars.
